BEIT SEFER at TBT Ava Phillips – Education Director Temple Beth Torah has a wide range of educational activities geared for each grade level: Kindergarten and First Grades: Sundays 9 - 11:45am
TBT offers a lot of programming and wonderful activities that make our Hebrew School lots of educational fun. Through tactile, auditory and visual methods, Hebrew letters are introduced. Through music and arts and crafts, Chagim and Torah are taught. In addition, there are fantastic, special programs, including Sukkah building, Challah making, oil press, Simchat Torah parties, music, dance and lots of games. It is a blast, and a great introduction into our Jewish world.
Second Grade: Sundays 9 - 11:45am
Second Grade at TBT is a continuation of the younger grades, introducing vowels into their learned Hebrew letter environment. We go into a little more detail into Chagim and Torah. We have the same special programs, and we begin to introduce prayer through music.
Third thru Fifth Grade: Sundays 9 - 11:45am & Tuesdays 4:45 – 7pm
Twice a week, you will find large groups of young people in our shul, participating in a variety of engaging activities. We teach a full Hebrew School curriculum, beginning with Hebrew Reading, pronunciation and writing in Hebrew. The study of Torah and Chagim are taught at appropriate grade levels and we encourage and incorporate hands-on activities including arts and crafts, cooking demonstrations, play acting, discussion groups and music. We add the idea of Tefilah to the learning and begin to prepare our students for Bar and Bat Mitzvah training.
Sixth Grade: Sundays 9 - 11:45am & Tuesdays 4:45 – 7pm / Shabbat Services 9:30 – 12 Noon
Adding to their previous years’ schedules, Sixth Graders also meet on Shabbat, when the Congregation is in session. Educational programs such as Minyan with the Rabbi, Lunch and Learn, a variety of discussion groups with the Rabbi and special assemblies lead students up to Bar and Bat Mitzvah training. In addition, we introduce many new subjects including Holocaust, Mitzvot, Jewish Heroes, more Hebrew, Chagim, Tefilot, Jewish Genealogy, and discussion on how to be a good person and a good Jew. Trop, the ancient melodies for all sacred scrolls, is introduced in a fun manner, as we encourage our children to take leading roles in running services in the shul. Shofrot – rams horns – are made by our children in preparation for the Holiday Season. They also prepare Shabbat meals, read from the Siddur, lead services on Friday night and help out in the younger classes as part of their, individual Mitzvah Projects.
Seventh Grade: Tuesdays 7 – 9:15pm / Shabbat Services 9:30 – 12 Noon
Seventh Graders prepare and practice for their Bar and Bat Mitzvah, as well as learn what it means to be a good Jewish individual in today’s world and why it is important to continue to learn about being Jewish. Mitzvah Projects are very important, both in and out of the Synagogue; leading services on both Friday Nights and Shabbat Mornings is greatly encouraged. Each TBT Bar and Bat Mitzvah student makes their own Yad: their personal Torah pointer for the ceremony. Cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts projects and in-depth discussion groups round out the Seventh Grade curriculum at TBT.
